 First Grade

Welcome to First Grade!

Welcome to South Anna’s 1st grade Home Page.  First grade is an exciting time in your child‘s life.    It offers him/her the opportunity to grow in all areas of the curriculum:  Language Arts, Math, Science, and Social Studies.  Our curriculum and goals are stimulated by a rich Literacy Diet, Investigations units in Math, cross curricular activities in Science and Social Studies, and use of the scientific process.

Click here to access the Virginia Department of Education's Standards of Learning webpage, and learn more about the Standards at the first grade level.

Sight words are words that the children do not have to or shouldn't decode and can recognize at first sight. Memorizing sight words is extremely helpful in that the larger the child's sight word vocabulary, the more fluently they will be able to read a text. Please click on the following link to access the sight words we would like for our First Grade students to practice throughout the year.

Are you interested in assisting your child in strengthening their emergent or beginning literacy skills? Click on the following link to access a document with tips and tricks to build literacy skills for first graders from our reading specialist, Mrs. Billingsley.

Reading aloud to children regularly is extremely important for beginning readers! It introduces the children to different genres, or types, of texts; introduces them to new vocabulary words; allows them to hear different types of sentence structures and patterns within texts (chronological, compare/contrast, main idea/supporting detail, plot development, etc.); and models appropriate reading fluency: speed, intonation, accuracy, and expression. Need some inspiration as to what to read aloud? Check out these 100 great read alouds and read aloud tips compiled by Mrs. Billingsley!

1st Grade Homework Policy:

The 1st grade teachers  utilize the Hanover County Public Schools' Homework Policy; we realize that each child’s learning style and ability level is different so we suggest the following:

  • 20 minutes is the maximum homework time for 1st graders

  • 10 - 15 minutes per night on reading: This may include oral reading, comprehension questions, fluency and expressive   reading practice, and/or mini-projects.

  • 5 - 10 minutes per night on word work/vocabulary:  This may be for spelling practice, sorting, or other activities assigned by the teacher.

  • Some special projects and math activities may also be assigned as required, but adjustments in other assignments will made.
