Every child is an artist.  The problem is how to remain an artist once he grows up.  - Pablo Picasso Spanish Cubist painter (1881-1973)

The art program at South Anna Elementary school is designed to:

  • Provide students with an opportunity to express their unique thoughts, ideas, and emotions

  • Teach a wide range of art techniques such as drawing, painting, collage, sculpture, ceramics, and crafts

  • Make connections to history, math, science, and literature

  • Allow students to discover different cultures and respond to the world around them

  • Help each student to achieve success

Visit this link to read an article listing ten reasons your child needs art in the school curriculum.

What can you do to encourage your child's interest in art:

  • Display your child's artwork proudly.  Whether it's stuck on the refrigerator or matted and framed, your child will know that you value their work.

  • Instead of asking "What is it?" encourage your child to talk about their art by simply saying "Tell me about this."  Not all children have developed the motor skills required to draw realistically, but they all have unique ideas and reasons for making choices in their artwork.

  • Provide art supplies for your child to use at home.  Even inexpensive crayons and paper can give your child an outlet for creative energy.

  • Visit a local museum or gallery.   It's a great way to spend a rainy day and it's free!
