 Inclement Weather

Click for Mechanicsville, Virginia Forecast

People who live in Hanover are aware that certain kinds of severe weather can bring normal operations to a standstill. When severe weather creates hazardous conditions, regular school opening may be delayed or suspended. Advance preparation enables the Hanover County School System to cope with such situations.

The first consideration for making a decision to delay or suspend school system operations is safety. On mornings when weather may create unsafe travel conditions, Hanover Schools' transportation employees begin road inspection between 4:00 and 5:00 in the morning. School officials monitor weather and road reports from the U.S. Weather Bureau, the Hanover Sheriff's Department and the Virginia State Police.

The final decision for school closing is made by the Superintendent of School. By 6:00 a.m. the Superintendent or his designee contacts radio and television stations which announce any change in normal school operations. These announcements are normally broadcast by 6:15 a.m. A list of the radio and television stations where announcements will be made appears at the bottom of this page.

Occasionally weather emergencies arise during the school day. Although every attempt is made for students to remain in school for the entire school day, at times conditions may require an early dismissal from school. The Superintendent or the Superintendent's designee will make any final decision regarding early dismissal. Parents are responsible for their children if early dismissal from school becomes necessary.
