The vision of Hanover County Public School's English as a Second Language (ESL) program is designed to provide exemplary English language education in conjunction with grade-appropriate content area instruction. Our program strives to provide students with a standards-based, rigorous curriculum that has as its primary goal the development of linguistic and academic competence and the improvement of teaching and learning. To enable our students to reach high standards and gain proficiency in Reading, Language Arts and Math, we train our content teachers to understand the unique needs of ELLs. We teach specific strategies to provide the content teachers with effective practices for teaching ELLs, such as differentiated instruction, active engagement, and a modified approach to sheltered English instruction. In addition, ESL teachers collaborate and conference with content area teachers to discern the needs of each ESL student and help develop plans for meeting these needs.
