Power Notes



Power Notes is a way for students to organize old and new information. Power Notes help students to identify main ideas and details. It is a similar to outlining, however, it offers a visual representation of the information and is to easier to follow.

When to use

this strategy:

· Use with any reading material.

· When writing about information read

· As a method of note taking

· As a study tool



· Use Power Notes to take notes on a nonfiction selection about Butterflies.

· Use Power Notes to organize geometric shapes and their attributes.

· Use Power Notes to categorize types of living things.

· Use Power Notes as a pre-writing tool to organize thoughts for a persuasive essay.

How to use

this strategy:

First, establish a Power Zero, which is the topic. Next, brainstorm all the main ideas that fall under the topic. These are considered Power Ones. Under each Power One, brainstorm for more details. These are considered Power Two’s. Each detail can have several more ideas under them. These are considered Power Three’s and Four’s.
